Rapra Technology Limited and NPL are pleased to announce the second international Conference on Joining Plastics, to be held in London, England, from 25-26 April 2006.
• A complex activity
Products that include plastic components need to use the best available joining methods if they are to achieve the best performance. Nevertheless choosing an efficient and effective joining method and putting it into production can become a complex activity. The potential applications are diverse as are the materials and methods that might have to be considered. Extensive research and development is sometimes necessary.
A wide variety of products rely on the effective joining of plastics, for instance, thin film packaging, large-scale building constructions, or automotive components. Many factors have to be taken into account such as the chemical and physical properties of the materials to be joined, performance requirements, and cost and manufacturing constraints.
• Basic technologies
Adding to these complications, there are also four quite different basic technologies that are used for joining plastics to themselves or to other materials. They are:
- Welding
- Mechanical fastening
- Adhesive bonding
- Solvent bonding
Each of these technologies in turn comprises a range of distinct techniques so that there are well over 30 separate joining processes that might have to be considered or evaluated.

We aim to bring together those, from both industry and academia, who have a common interest in Joining Plastics: researchers, technologists, designers, manufacturing engineers, managers and specialists. This is an excellent opportunity to network with experts in this field, to discuss the latest developments, and to acquire a better understanding of this multifaceted but important area of technology.
