City: Gainesville, FL 32611-0570
Country: United States
Virtually every modern industry relies on packaging science and technology to contain, protect, preserve or enhance the value of its goods as they hustle from factory to customer. Traditionally, packaging scientists migrated from other disciplines and relied on experience for training. Today's marketplace is driven to improve efficiency, reduce costs and maximize end-product value. The University of Florida's Packaging Science Program is designed to allow students to hit the ground running in this exciting, fast-paced industry that is in need of qualified people.
Packaging Science offers paths to many career opportunities. The Packaging Industry involves many commercial activities including raw material production and distribution, conversion of raw materials into usable forms, graphic design, printing and marketing, warehousing and distribution, and post-use recycling, reuse, conversion to energy and/or disposal. Modern packaging professionals are continually pushing the envelope to improve the lives of people, efficiency of industry and the relationship with our environment. Recent evidence of this trend is the application of computerized 3-D packaging design to improve conceptualization and speed to market, and the development of novel biodegradable plastics to minimize waste destined for landfills reduce our dependency on petroleum, and to minimize environmental impact.
The Packaging Science Program offers the student a solid foundation in the pure sciences (biology, chemistry, physics and math). The student learns to apply these fundamental principles to real-world issues facing the packaging industry. The Packaging Science program also incorporates useful tools for commerce such as accounting and economics to help prepare the student for a successful career. Electives allow the student to tailor the program toward his or her interests. Industry internship opportunities allow the student to benefit from real-world experience while networking with potential employers.
Minor in Packaging Science - The Packaging Science program also offers undergraduate students the opportunity to obtain a minor in Packaging Science through the Department of Agricultural and biological Engineering. The minor is designed to compliment studies to help prepare the student for a career in or closely associated to Packaging. To obtain a minor the student must successfully complete a total of 15 credit hours from a list of preselected courses that provide a concentrated focus on Packaging related knowledge, technology and skills.
