Politecnico di Milano - Industrial Design Department
Address: Via Durando 38/a
City: 20158 Milano
Country: Italy
Since the sixties the aggregate of industrial and professional activities specializing in the design and manufacturing of industrial products have placed Italy in the limelight. Italian products have gained introduction in international markets, as well as national ones, and industrial design has become a key factor to its success in the face of an international competition.
Thanks to innovative products and processes Italian companies have succeeded in launching high quality products in the market, characterized by continuous functional, technical, ergonomic and formal innovations. All this has contributed to the success of Italian companies, gaining international recognition for the design quality and skills of Italian industrial designers.
In spite of this indisputable success, on the part of the "Italian designer" as a recognized professional figure, a specific academic education in the field of industrial design has lacked for a long time. The challenges Italian companies today face, due to an increasingly fierce international competition, on the contrary call for the contribution of professionals specifically trained in industrial design.
Neither traditional architecture degree courses nor the numerous private schools have proven capable of meeting this increasingly crucial educational requirement. The graduate course in industrial design has been created with the specific objective of offering an adequate training to the industrial designers of the future.
Thanks to the traditional combination of different skills guaranteed by the engineering and architecture faculties of the Milan Polytechnic and the contribution of recognized professionals and entrepreneurs, the Course offers a curriculum which is totally unique in the academic scenario
The Industrial Design System of the Milan Polytechnic
The education offered by the Milan Polytechnic in the field of industrial design is today organized in a five-year course, upon which completion the student obtains a university degree in industrial design. The didactic system is arranged in a number of fields corresponding to different types of graduate courses: industrial product design, interior design, communication design, fashion design.
A large variety of postgraduate courses are also offered. A three-year Doctorate Research Course in Industrial Design has been created; students are admitted subject to a competition and are awarded study grants. As of the academic year of 1999/2000 the Industrial Design System of the Polytechnic has, through the creation of the Polidesign consortium, added a series of continuous postgraduate training initiatives, including masters, brief retraining courses, seminaries, conventions and design workshops.
